Senior curling championships kick off in Tisdale

Feb 21, 2018 | 1:00 PM

CurlSask has returned to Tisdale for another championship event.

Beginning Wednesday, the town’s curling club is hosting the joint (both men’s and women’s) senior provincial championships. Eight teams from each bracket are competing. Host committee chair Bob Jackson said the town has had recent success hosting curling events including last year’s Tankard.

“We’ve had two very successful events here so CurlSask came back and asked if we’d do it again,” Jackson said.

The draws began at 9 a.m. Wednesday and will continue three times a day through Saturday, Feb. 24. The championship games will be played Sunday, Feb. 25 at 1 p.m.

Part of securing a successful event is generating sponsorships. Jackson said the committee changed the focus for this year’s event.

“We have done more individual sponsorships this year like families. We dropped the prices and got more people involved, it turned out well,” he said.

Among the field is Prince Albert Sports Hall of Fame and recent Scotties champion Sherry Anderson. Christopher Lake’s Jacquie Swiderski and Wadena’s Delores Syrota are also competing in the women’s field. The men’s bracket features two-time Tankard winners Brad Heidt and Eugene Hritzuk.

A banquet will be held Thursday during the event. Tickets are $25 and available at the curling rink. The funds raised from hosting the event will go back into the local curling club.
