Nipawin residents have their options on who they’ll vote for to fill in the empty seat on the town’s council.

Gene Rusk and Laurie Kratochvil will be the two nominees to fill the empty seat, which opened when former councillor Ismael Aliguyon resigned in October 2018.

Stacey Vik, a longstanding member of the Nipawin Fire Department, did submit his nomination for the by-election. However, due to the Town of Nipawin’s municipal fire department policy preventing any individuals from serving both as a councillor and a firefighter at the same time.

Barry Elliott, Nipawin’s chief administrative officer, told Vik he had overlooked the policy.

“I truly regret that I erred in not sharing that information with him at the time,” Elliott told northeastNOW. “He entered into the nomination with the best intentions and I express my appreciation to him for that.”

Elliott expects Nipawin council to review the fire department policy at a future council meeting.

The by-election for the vacant seat on Nipawin’s council will take place on April 3. Elliott said there will be advanced polling announced at a future date.

The winner of the by-election is expected to be sworn at the following Nipawin council meeting on April 8. The term will last until Nipawin’s next general election in early-November 2020.
