Melfort looking for Historic Post Office tenant

Apr 18, 2019 | 5:08 PM

With the long-term goal of renting out the Historic Post Office still being in the air, the City of Melfort is ready for short-term options in the meantime.

After building improvements, the city is looking to lease out the building anywhere from three to five years.

Brent Lutz, told northeastNOW a short-term tenant would activate the building and bring in revenue to help the city with operating and maintenance costs.

“Certainly it will require some improvements,” Lutz said. “Whatever tenant that’s looking would need to be able to utilize the space that’s available and bring some improvement into the space that would provide what they would need for their business.”

Lutz said the city wants to keep long-term use available for 10 years down the road when a higher use for the building could arise.

The city thinks a commercial business of some sort will be able to rent the building, although Lutz said they’ll evaluate each proposal that comes forward.

Nightly rentals

The City of Melfort is thinking shorter than short-term rentals for the building.

A policy change during the Melfort council meeting on April 15 allowed rentals of the Great Hall in the Historic Post Office for nightly events after the city received multiple requests from the public.

“Up until this point and time the building has not been in a condition where we felt comfortable being able to lease it or rent it to the public for an event,” Lutz said. “The only events we’ve hosted in the building until now have been city sponsored events.

“Now with the installation of the windows and some of the other work that has been done in there, the space is usable and it’s a unique venue.”

To protect the city’s interests, event organizers using the post office won’t be able to sell or serve alcohol and are responsible for their own setup and tear down.

The Historic Post Office’s Great Hall will be available for rent on a daily or half-day basis.
