Running for a cure

Jason Holtvogt to run ultra-marathon for second year in a row

Aug 16, 2022 | 4:27 PM

The second annual 4x4x48 ultra-marathon will be run by Jason Holtvogt, once again, to help raise money to find a cure for diabetes.

Last year’s original run was inspired by his daughter Aubree, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes back in 2018.

Holtvogt will be running four miles, starting at the Humboldt Golf Course, every four hours, for a 48-hour period as a reference to what caregivers of those with type 1 diabetes go through every day.

He told northeastNOW he never expected the first run to be so successful, that it would inspire this to be an annual tradition.

“When I first said it was going to do this, not a whole lot of thought went into it. Being as successful as it was raising over $40,000, really on a shoestring… I’m just a dad who’s not a runner and who had a goal in mind.”

Not only has this cause inspired a second run, but it has also inspired an entire event around next weekend.

Next Friday, Aug 26, Codie Prevost will be hosting a concert and banquet at the new Humboldt Golf Club Event Centre to kick off Holtvogt’s 4X4X48 run.

That, along with a silent and live auction will go towards helping the number of funds raised.

Holtvogt said he is beyond appreciative for all the support he and Aubree have gotten.

“It’s gone far and above what I could do, just incredible support with people reaching out. Sometimes you just put it out there and the community comes around you and really helps out. It’s exciting for us to have so many in the community supporting us to try to raise this money.”

And while the money is what helps fund a cure, there are other ways to show your support and join the cause.

Holtvogt explained, as far as he knows, he is the only one doing all twelve runs, however, people are encouraged to come out and join him, even if it’s just for one.

“‘We’ve got a few runners from the run club that are going to be joining me part of the time and splitting up their runs. Even last year, there wasn’t one run where I didn’t have someone with me. Just showing up and doing one run or one bike ride, just being there is phenomenal.”

Tickets for the concert and banquet are still available and need to be purchased by the end of this week.

People are also encouraged to dawn their superhero costumes, next Saturday at 8 p.m., for a special ‘hero run’.
