The City of Melfort has hired Brenda Mellon as their new Museum Curator and Cultural Coordinator.

“I am deeply honoured and excited about this opportunity,” Mellon told northeastNOW. The lifelong Melfort native said she’s incredibly proud to be from the community.

Mellon has more than 30 years of educational leadership experience with Cumberland College, and she is currently an economic advisor with the University of Saskatchewan. She has an education and fine arts background, and has volunteered with the Melfort Arts Council, Girl Guides, Culture Days, and Reconciliation Melfort.

“I look forward to celebrating our rich history and facilitating cultural initiatives and partnerships,” said Mellon, who will replace long-time curator and cultural coordinator Gailmarie Anderson, who is retiring. An afternoon tea in Anderson’s honour will be held Thursday, Apr. 25 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Melfort & District Museum.

Mellon said Anderson has meant a lot to the CIty of Melfort and surrounding area.

“Gailmarie has left an indelible mark on our community, and it would be impossible to fill her shoes. Her invaluable contributions to numerous initiatives and projects have left a lasting legacy that I am committed to upholding and building upon.”

Mellon said she’s committed to community engagement and is excited to collaborate with stakeholders to preserve and promote Melfort.

Director of Community Services Rob Lok said Mellon is a well-known member of the community who brings a wealth of experience to the position.

“Brenda’s skills in leadership, education, program delivery, funding management, and her passion for the arts will serve her well as our new Museum Curator and Cultural Coordinator. I really look forward to working with Brenda.”

Mellon will take over the position May 13.
