Raising awareness

Stepping Up: Nipawin hosts Walk a Mile in Her Shoes

Jun 5, 2026 | 2:35 PM

Violence thrives in silence.

That was a message from North East Outreach and Support Services (NEOSS) at their annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event in downtown Nipawin on Friday.

Local men strapped on a pair of high heels and walked a mile to show solidarity with victims and raise awareness about the impact of violence against women and girls.

“While the walk is known for its symbolic high heels, the event welcomes everyone – men, women, families, community groups, and local organizations – to participate and stand together in support of creating a safer community,” a NEOSS news release said.

Outreach Manager Tracey Zwozdesky told northeastNOW that NEOSS has been a part of Walk a Mile since 2013. Last year’s event was held in Tisdale, this year’s walk was in Nipawin, and she said they hope to bring the event back to Melfort in 2027.

“The event is about raising awareness for domestic violence, and all of the women who have been impacted by violence on an interpersonal level,” Zwozdesky said. “Whether that’s through sexualized violence, domestic violence, or family violence, it just helps to bring awareness and our key in ending violence in our communities is to bring awareness to the issue.”

Zwozdesky said the men that wear the high heels stand in solidarity with those affected by domestic violence.

“They get blisters and bruises and they need band-aids, and it’s just a small portion of what a woman goes through when they’re experiencing domestic violence,” Zwozdesky said.

Participants could walk solo or in teams to collect pledges that support crucial services that NEOSS provides, including the Women’s Safe Shelter in Melfort and personal counselling for victims. Pledges can be made through cheques to NEOSS or via e-transfer.
