Local talent highlights 2026 SJHL draft for Northeast clubs

The 2026 SJHL Draft was held on Tuesday as numerous northeast hockey players heard their names called, some by local clubs.

In total, the Melfort Mustangs selected five players over eight rounds, while the Humboldt Broncos drafted nine. Meanwhile, five draft picks were from the northeast.

Melfort Mustangs

Beginning in the 2011-born draft, the Mustangs chose Porcupine Plain native, Oakley Reed. Reed, a defenceman, spent the majority of the 2025/26 season with the U15 AA North East Wolfpack, registering 19 points in 21 games. The seventh selection in the first round also suited up twice with the Tisdale Trojans.

Next up was the 19th overall selection of the second round, Carter Bleau. A native of Gull Lake, the defenceman spent all of his 26 games this season with the U15 AA Swift Current Broncos, producing 27 points. Bleau is also a draft pick of the Regina Pats, as the 123rd pick of the 2026 WHL Prospects Draft.

Moving to the 2010-born portion of the draft, Melfort’s first selection came in the second round, 19th overall. Tisdale’s own Oliver Homstol is the newest member of the organization. The forward played 42 games, registering 15 points with his hometown Trojans.

The Blue and Greens’ next selection came in the fourth round (43rd overall) with Martensville native, Paxton Hale. Hale, a defenceman, had 44 points in 36 games with the U16 AA Martensville Marauders. He also played with the Prince Albert Mintos for three games, putting up an assist in the process. Hale is a draft pick of his hometown Raiders, as the 200th overall selection in the 2025 WHL Prospects draft.

Following was White City native, Braden Nowoselski, in the fifth round (53rd overall). Another defenceman, Nowoselski, had 26 points in 43 games with the U18 AAA Moose Jaw Warriors. He is also a draft pick of the Saskatoon Blades, having been taken 43rd overall in the 2025 WHL Prospects Draft.

Finally, the Stangs’ final selection was Moose Jaw product, Dillon Flanagan (sixth round, 67th overall). A defenceman, Flanagan, had nine points in 33 contests with the Prairie Hockey Academy U17 prep squad.

Humboldt Broncos

As for the Green and Gold, they started their day by taking Jett Kennedy in the first round of the 2011-born draft, fourth overall. A Saskatoon defenceman, Kennedy played 31 matches with his hometown U15 AA Generals, posting 38 points. He also suited up once with the Saskatoon Crunch U18 AA club.

Next up was Bruno product, Kade Dauvin, who went 16th overall in the second round. The forward already has experience in Humboldt, having suited up 29 times for the U15 AA Broncos, registering 59 points. He also played one game with the U18 AAA Warman Wildcats.

Concluding the 2011-born portion was Saskatoon native, Brayden Thomas. The 24th overall pick of the second round was acquired by the Broncos in a previous trade with the Flin Flon Bombers. The blueliner had 30 games with his hometown U15 AA Bandits, registering 30 points. He also had four points in four games with the U18 AA Saskatoon Screaming Eagles.

Proceeding to the 2010-born portion, the Green and Gold’s first selection came via Prince Albert’s Burke Whitter. Chosen fourth overall in the first round, Whitter, a forward, split his time between three PA organizations. He produced 43 points in 18 games with the U16 AA Renegades, two points in three games with the U18 AA Timberwolves, and 11 points in 15 games with the U18 AAA Mintos.

Following was another first-round selection, 12th overall, in Regina’s Eli Beaudin. A defenceman, Beaudin had 32 points in 44 games with his hometown U18 AA Vics. His draft slot came to the Broncos in a prior trade with the Flin Flon Bombers.

Shortly after was the 16th overall selection in the second round, Owen Kahl. A native of Saskatoon, Kahl had 25 points over 34 games with his hometown U18 AA Riverkings. The defenceman also played five times with the U18 AAA Saskatoon Contacts.

Next up was a local draft pick for Humboldt in Muenster product, Cohen Kuntz. Kuntz, the 27th overall pick of the third round, played twice with the U18 AAA Saskatoon Blazers, posting a 1- 1 record with a 3.02 goals-against-average and a .882 save-percentage. The netminder also suited up four times with the U18 AAA Prince Albert Mintos, producing a 1-2 record with a 2.86 goals-against-average and a .905 save percentage. Acquired by Weyburn via Kindersley, Kuntz is also a 2025 selection (271st overall) of the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the WHL Prospects Draft.

The Broncos draft concluded in the fourth round with a pair of picks.

First up was Lanigan native, Kash Elke, fourth round, 40th overall. In 42 games with the Tisdale Trojans, the forward had 17 points. He also suited up for the Moose Jaw Warriors WHL squad, which drafted him 18th overall in 2025, playing two games.

Concluding was Shaunavon product, Benson Wallis. The 46th overall selection in the fourth round, which came to Humboldt in a trade with Battlefords, was a point-per-game player with the U18 AA Swift Current Broncos through 36 contests.

Northeast Locals

The only local player not to get drafted by either the Mustangs or the Broncos was Hudson Bay native Lucas Drechsler. The 23rd overall selection in the second round of the 2010-born draft had 61 points in 37 games with the U16 AA Sask East Oilers. The forward also registered two points in five games with the Tisdale Trojans.
