Looking Back

Despite no Centennial Cup run, Mustangs season still a success

Jun 15, 2026 | 2:48 PM

The Melfort Mustangs have been used to a much longer season the past couple of years, usually just a couple of weeks into their offseason at this point of the year.

After back-to-back league titles and National silver medals in 2024 and 2025, it was typical for their season to run into mid to late May, with the community awaiting their return for a championship parade and banquet.

Unfortunately, in 2026, that trend did not continue, as the Mustangs bowed out in the first round of the SJHL playoffs, by way of the Battlefords North Stars, in late March.

Despite falling short of their ultimate goal, repeating as champions and making it to a third straight Centennial Cup Final, when taking a look back at the campaign as a whole, it was still a successful year.

“Although we wanted to go deeper in the playoffs, it was a successful and fantastic season for the organization. I think most importantly, the players need to be thanked, and they can also hold their heads very high for how they represented the Melfort Mustangs,” explained head coach Trevor Blevins.

“We wanted to be competitive, and we wanted to have a chance to win. We felt we had pieces, and we had to tinker throughout the year based on what we needed for the roster, but we had a great culture and dressing room, we worked hard every day, and we enjoyed coming to the rink. We were in a lot of hockey games, and our run after Christmas was phenomenal to put ourselves in the position we ended in. It was really special, and it does go in a different category versus a championship year, but that doesn’t take away from the effort and commitment that our players had.”

At their worst, Melfort found themselves multiple games below .500 and in 10th place in the league standings, well out of a playoff spot.

Once they hit what was their rock bottom, the Stangs rallied off a 12-game winning streak, fueling them to the sixth seed, once the playoffs rolled around.

“We did have to make numerous changes throughout the year, and there’s always an adjustment period when that happens, but our guys did a really great job coming together, and the culture and chemistry really just took off in January. We did a great job bringing guys into the fight, and our leadership group really made sure guys fit in and played the right way,” Blevins added.

“The last few years have been a grind for sure, but that’s no excuse. Ultimately, I think we did all we could in the series against Battlefords. Other than a scenario here or there, I thought we were the better team all around. That’s hockey, though, and that’s the way it goes sometimes, and we’ve been on the other side before… moving forward, we’ve already done a great job recruiting, and we’re going to be looking at adding some older pieces with experience to round out the roster and go after it again this coming season.”
