Resigning Aug. 31

Yorkton-Melville MP Cathay Wagantall discusses departure

Jun 19, 2026 | 12:00 PM

The federal riding of Yorkton-Melville will soon have a new Member of Parliament.

Conservative Cathay Wagantall, who has been the MP in the riding since 2015, has announced her resignation as of Aug. 31.

Wagantall told northeastNOW it all came down to being a personal decision.

“My husband and I walked through our future,” Wagantall explained.

She said after almost 11 years representing the constituency, they both felt that it was the perfect time to transition to life outside of politics.

The MP stated that being part of the Saskatchewan Conservative caucus was among her many highlights, and working under party leader Pierre Poilievre has been a pleasure.

“Being able to come to a consensus more often than not, by far, and the relationships that have been maintained are very special.”

Another highlight for Wagantall includes serving on the Veterans Affairs standing committee during her entire tenure. She is especially proud of her efforts in working through the many issues women face in the military. Wagantall and others brought forth amendments to ensure women had the choice to take their circumstances to either civilian or military court, but Wagantall said the Liberal government removed the amendments when they gained control of the committees.

Wagantall also plans to remain engaged in the mass tort lawsuits brought forward by Canadian Forces members for the ordered use of the anti-malaria drug Mefloquine without revealing the potential side effects.  She said she was part of getting the Surgeon General to stop members from continuing the drug if significant side effects develop. An added highlight for Wagantall was her work in making service dogs more available for those in need.

The work wasn’t always large-scale, according to Wagantall. She said she has had many fond encounters locally.

“Working with our small businesses and our agriculture community [has been a highlight],” said Wagantall. “Obviously it has been a huge challenge for them, and farming is, but just the added pressures of the additional challenges they’ve had to face, the challenge of getting their fertilizer and the expectations of the [federal] government to use less by 2030 but somehow grow more.”

The outgoing MP said the decision to leave was the right one, but it’s still bittersweet.

“I just have been so blessed to be a part of this riding of Yorkton-Melville; the people are amazing, every interaction that I have had.”

Nelson Pohl has been nominated by the Conservative Party to be their candidate in the byelection that will be held after Wagantall’s departure. That date has not yet been set.

The Yorkton-Melville constituency encompasses local communities including Arborfield, Carrot River, Hudson Bay, Kelvington, Naicam, Porcupine Plain, and Watson.
