Council approves Main Street concept plan introducing angle parking

Angle parking would be used on the east side of the street, while the west side would continue with parallel parking. Homes said angle parking would add about 16 parking spots in the downtown core. He added that the city got inspiration from similar initiatives in Watrous and Biggar.

The plan is a few years out, said Homes, and is a major initiative.

“Between the underground and the surface work, this project will be…around $8 million.”

Homes said most of the money would come from city reserves, and they will pursue grant opportunities to supplement the funds.

The earliest any work would take place would be in 2028, but It’s more likely it would start in 2029. He added that the underground lines all need to be replaced, and should the old lines fail, it would create a larger hassle for the city and local businesses in the area. The three blocks would all be done at the same time, and the surface work would take place the following year when the earth settled.

“[The angle parking] should make shopping in the downtown easier; it looks like we can get 16 more stalls in those three blocks,” Homes explained.

Regardless, the project is still several years away, and Homes reiterated that they would consult the public about the concept plan, likely early in the new year.

Councillor Tara Muntain did not vote on the motion, citing a conflict of interest, while Councillor Seth MacNaughton was not present at Monday’s council meeting.
