Hawks hit the ice after 10-day break

Nov 9, 2024 | 5:11 PM

The Nipawin Hawks are back in action Saturday following a 10-day hiatus.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) club will host the Flin Flon Bombers at the Centennial Arena at 7 p.m. for the first time this season. The teams met on the opening night of the SJHL campaign, the Bombers won 4-3 at the Whitney Forum to open the season series. Head Coach Tad Kozun said the team is excited to get back on the ice.

“It’s been a long time since we have been able to hit anyone in a different coloured jersey,” he joked after the team’s gameday meeting. “On a serious note we know the wins haven’t come and we haven’t been competitive enough on some nights, but we were able to take a break, reset, bring in a couple guys, send some out and now we can’t wait for faceoff tonight.”

Nipawin will start Nathan Claydon in net, the 18-year-old was solid in his Hawks’ debut on Oct. 29, a 3-0 loss to Melville. Newly acquired forward Aiden Bruce will dress for Nipawin, defenseman Hoah Heinrich suffered a setback at practice this week, his first game as a Hawk will be pushed back to likely next weekend. Kozun said the minor injury was unfortunate but both newcomers looked good in practice during the break.

“Both have come and competed hard at practice with the goals of helping the organization win and get better,” Kozun said. “Unfortunately, Noah got banged up a little bit this week and can’t go tonight, but we’re excited to get on the ice tonight and see what Aiden brings to the club.”

Flin Flon is coming into Nipawin fresh off a 6-2 win at home over Melfort Friday. The Hawks are seeking their first victory since Oct. 5.

This will be the second of eight total meetings this season.
