Mustangs ready to get back to it after holiday break

Jan 3, 2025 | 1:49 PM

The Melfort Mustangs are back in action tonight for the first time in nearly two weeks, following their Christmas break.

Melfort will welcome the Melville Millionaires to the Palace tonight for their opening game of 2025, as they look to carry over a 15-game win streak from 2024.

“All the boys had a good time seeing family and friends and taking a bit of a break from hockey,” said Mustangs’ defenceman Logan Keup. “We’re all ready to get back and excited to play again though, and we’ve been having a good week of practice so far.”

The Mustangs and the Millionaires split their two prior meetings of the season, which came back in early November, as each club gave each other their first loss of the season.

Since then Melfort has stayed at the top of the pack, while Melville has levelled off a bit, however, Keup knows it still won’t be an easy battle.

“It’s gonna be a challenge for sure, they’re gonna play hard and they’re a good team. They’re gonna do the little things right, so we’re gonna have to do our details right and play hard and hopefully come out with some W’s,” he added.

The Mills also have the advantage of being a little less rusty, as they played a pair of games against the Yorkton Terriers this week.

Both games were losses though and may make them a little less fresh with four games in six days.

“We feel like we’ve been able to knock off the rust in practice this week,” Keup told northeastNOW. “It was definitely good to get back on the ice before we played again, it was much needed.”

Friday night’s game will begin the home-and-home set between the Mustangs and the Millionaires, as the rematch will be held Saturday in Melville.

The contest also starts the second half of the season for Melfort, as the defending champs and second-ranked team in the country hope to build on their impressive 26 and 4 start.

“There’s no letting down, each day we gotta come to work harder, and we’ll have our downs, but we gotta keep our heads up and keep working hard,” concluded Keup.

Puck drop at the Northern Lights Palace is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
