Hawks tie series again with comeback overtime win in Weyburn

It’s down to a best of three series between Nipawin and Weyburn after the Hawks won game four 3-2 in overtime on Wednesday to square the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) at two games each.

The Red Wings, looking to take a stranglehold on the series after a 6-3 win in game three Tuesday jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game four after a first period goal and another early in the second period.

Nipawin was able to cut into the lead on Noah Heinrich’s first career SJHL playoff goal. Brendan Olson tied the game late in the middle period with his first third career SJHL postseason goal and first with the Hawks.

No one scored in the third forcing overtime where Konnor Watson scored at 5:55 to give Nipawin the win going back to the Centennial Arena for game five. Watson said he went to the net, and the puck found him for his second goal of the series.

“It was kind of a breakdown by Weyburn, Hoiner [Eric Hoiness] kind of passed it up to Karky [Mason Karakochuk] off the wall and he found me and I had a wide open net. I kind of just blacked out. I don’t even remember my celebration” the 19-year-old Witchekan Lake First Nation, Sask. product said after the game.

Watson led the Hawks with 22 goals this season, tied with Karakochuk. The former Prince Albert Minto standout also added two assists in the game after he was forced to sit out of game three with a suspension. He said returning to the lineup and scoring the winner was the biggest moment of his hockey career.

“Yes, I would say it was. It was good, it was so much fun, all the boys were hyped, I was hyped, it was sick,” he added.

Game five will be Saturday at the Centennial Arena in Nipawin, game six will be Monday back I Weyburn. Both games are 7 p.m. starts with the pregame show on 750 Beach Radio starting at 6:45 p.m.
