More lightning but less wildfires so far in 2026
If you feel like you’re seeing more lightning in the sky this year, your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you.
According to data provided by Environment Canada meteorologist Janelle Gergely, the amount of lightning in Saskatchewan has gone up from 62,000 flashes in June of 2025 to over 77,000 in June of this year.
“Then for July, of course July is not over, but in 2025, there was 53,000 flashes, and this year, we’re already at 119,000.”
Environment Canada tracks lightning in “flashes,” not individual lightning strikes. A flash is the entire lightning event, which can include multiple strokes — the individual bursts of electricity that cause the flickering effect often seen during a storm.
