High School curling regionals and provincials coming to Nipawin

“Parents are always coming around to support their children, it’s pretty amazing,” Miller told northeastNOW. Our hotels get filled up, our restaurants are busy, we have an amazing facility in the Evergreen, and we’ve got one of the best viewing areas to be had around. So, it’s really exciting to have this calibre of curling here in town.”

Teams are coming from Tisdale, Humboldt, Prince Albert, Arborfield, Shelbrook, Bellevue, Carrot River, Wadena, Quill Lake, and Foam Lake to participate in the tournament and possibly punch their tickets to Provincials.

The Provincial tournament for girls and mixed are also being held in Nipawin. Carrot River is the official host school for the mixed tournament. Miller said it’s been a whirlwind getting ready for hosting both regionals, and provincials.

“It doesn’t happen very often where you get to host both,” Miller said. “But this has kind of been a year and a half in the making, working with the town, working with the Evergreen, in conjunction with the school. So we’ve kind of had this on the back burner. And a couple of weeks ago, we also held our own Northeast playdowns, so it’s been a busy facility.”

Miller added that having an event like this in the region is also really good for grassroots curling.

Miller also said it’s a good opportunity for the older curlers to get a chance to see how they need to play to get to the provincial level.

Draws begin at noon on Friday, March 1, and could possibly go until 7 p.m. on Saturday.
