Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID)

The federal government is asking Canadians to provide feedback on eligibility for medical assistance in dying (MAID) and criterion relating to ‘reasonable foreseeability of death’.

The possibility of new eligibility requirements was revealed on Monday, January 13^th, with the Department of Justice posting a questionnaire offering Canadians ‘the opportunity to share their views with the Government of Canada on this deeply personal and very important issue.’

A full review is expected to take place this summer, however the Government of Canada is requesting feedback to see how Canadians are responding to the Quebec Superior Court ruling in September 2019 that Canadians should not have to be near death to qualify for medical assistance to end their lives.

Updating Canada’s MAID law will expand eligibility for MAID beyond people who are nearing the end of life, and could possibly result in other changes once the review is complete.

The two-week public consultation includes themes surrounding safeguards and potential revisions to the current eligibility requirements.

This consultation closes on Monday, January 27, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. (PST).
