Hard work paying off for Broncos as two honoured with monthly awards

The Humboldt Broncos are once again celebrating some key players on their roster this week.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) Player Of The Month awards honours a number of young players who are making waves this season, including two players for the green and gold.

Broncos forward Logan Kurki is taking home SGEU MVP for the month for his scoring efforts on the ice.

In the last 13 games for the green and gold, the 20-year-old has earned 10 goals and 14 assists for a total of 24 points to put him at the top of the SJHL leaderboard along with fellow Broncos Connor McGrath and Alec Saretzky.

Also recognized this week is Rayce Ramsay who was named Sasktel SJHL Goalie of the Month.

Ramsay has logged more minutes than any other SJHL goalie and has kept opposing teams to less than two goals or less in the last 12 of 15 games.

Ramsay finished the month with a 12-2-0-0 record, a 2.21 goals-against average (GAA) and .922 save percentage.

Kurki attributed his stellar record to hard work and consistency both as a player and a member of an all-around strong team.

“Just doing the right things every night and doing them every night. As a team, you know, just as all the guys coming together, becoming friends, becoming a family just be one big unit and then winning games together,” Kurki told northeastNOW.

While the Broncos are currently in a good spot as a team and with many of their players, Kurki recognizes that it is early in the season and they will be keeping their focus on continually winning hockey games.

“Right now our group, we’ve got a humble swagger to ourselves. Don’t want to get too cocky and to add of ourselves because it’s only 17 games in but we still want to have that edge to our game and that kind of swagger.”

While the championship is the end goal for the Humboldt team, Ramsay said the team is staying focused on the one game at a time mentality.

“We can’t focus on outcomes, we need to focus on our process. We’re doing everything we can to prepare and we’re playing games as hard as we can, and we treat every game like we’re playing the first-place team.”

To see Kurki and the rest of his teammates get recognized for their hard work is also a pleasure, said Ramsay.

“We work really hard in practice, and I get to see these guys every day and you get to know them and enjoy being around them. And I’m really happy to see them having individual success as well.”

Kurki echoed the sentiment about the man guarding the pipes as well.

“He’s probably one of the most focused individuals I’ve ever met. He deserves all that; all the accomplishments and all the compliments he’s getting about his game right now. He’s worked harder than anybody else, and he deserves everything he’s getting.”

The Broncos are currently on a seven-game winning streak and will be heading on the road for the next five games. They will be back on home ice on Nov. 17 to take on the Notre Dame Hounds.
