The boys of summer are ready to hit the diamond, which means it’s time for people to root for their home team.

The Highway 3 Baseball League opens its season Tuesday night featuring some of the best senior baseball players from Prince Albert and northeast Saskatchewan.

Six teams are participating this year: The Birch Hills Brewers, Tisdale Rangers, Pasquia Angels, Humboldt Senior Dodgers and Prince Albert Royals, with a new team starting this year, the Porcupine Plain Pirates.

Adam Morrison plays with the Brewers and is the team’s representative on the league board. He said the teams are excited to finally be playing.

“Especially with that long, long, cold spring we had, everyone’s pretty happy to get out on the diamond. Birch Hills has had a few practices, so it was kind of nice to see everyone. As long as the warm weather stays, I think everyone will be pretty happy to be back.”

The teams will play an eight-game regular season then playoffs to determine the champion, of which Birch Hills are the defending titleholders. The regular season runs until July 9 with playoffs to follow.

Morrison said the players have been working hard to prepare for the season and are hoping more fans come to the games.

He added, that the amount of talent the teams have is incredible and watching a ball games brings the communities together.

The season gets underway Tuesday night when the Birch Hills Brewers host the Prince Albert Royals with the first pitch at 6:30 p.m.
