Melfort Commit

Mustangs add to growing list of recent commits

May 31, 2022 | 10:10 AM

The Melfort Mustangs have added their seventh commit of the offseason and fourth in the past four (business) days.

Now joining the Mustangs for the upcoming 2022/23 season is their sixth forward commit, 2004-born Kyle Sanford.

The 6-1, 175 lb Kamloops, B.C. product played this past season with the Kamloops Storm of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) in B.C.’s Junior B circuit.

In 41 games, Sanford scored seven goals and added 19 assists for 26 points. His 26 points were good for third on the team. He also added four goals and three assists for seven points in 13 playoff games, which put him in a tie for the team lead in goals and was third alone in points, respectably.

In a press release sent to northeastnow, Melfort head coach and general manager, Trevor Blevins, spoke about the newest member of his team.

“Kyle is a responsible 200-foot player with a high hockey IQ, and a high compete level,” he said. “He finds the right areas on the ice to put himself and his teammates in positions to score.”

Sanford also joined the Merritt Centennials of the BCHL for four games this season but was held off the scoresheet.

During the COVID-shortened season, Sanford played four games with the Delta Hockey Academy’s U18 Prep team. He also played three games with that prep team in 2019/2020 as a call-up and had two points over three games.
