Melfort Toastmasters holding last-ditch events to avoid shutting down

To say the Melfort Toastmasters are in need of new members would be an understatement.

The non-profit, which aims to help people with public speaking and leadership skills, currently has six members. They need a total of eight by the end of March to avoid having operations suspended.

Margaret Andris, the vice president of public relations for the group, told northeastNOW the last couple of years have been tough.

“We did have 23 members, but due to COVID and everything else, our membership declined.”

In an attempt to save the group, three open houses have been scheduled. The first takes place on Jan. 26, while the other two are slated for Feb 9. And Feb 16.

Andris explained they’re planning on getting creative during the open houses to try and entice people. Their second meeting is slated to have a poetry theme since it’s just a few days ahead of Valentine’s Day.

“You come ready with a poem that you’ve invented yourself and you’ll be able to present it that night.”

The last open house will have a special speaker as Brad Korbo, the president of the BLT Advanced Toastmasters Club in Regina will be on hand to meet members and people interested in joining the group.

Melfort Toastmasters is also planning a five-day workshop where people will get tips on how to improve their communication and leadership skills.

“You can use them in all aspects of your life. At work, going out socializing,” said Andris. “Toastmasters is where to go and make mistakes because it’s a safe place.”

The cost to participate in the workshop is $50, however, those who become members can use that money towards their membership fee which is $105 bi-annually.
