Nipawin extends mayoral investigation timeline

Jun 27, 2023 | 12:00 PM

The investigation into the conduct of Mayor Rennie Harper of Nipawin has been extended, the town said in an emailed statement Tuesday.

β€œTo ensure this investigation is a fair and impartial process, all parties are given adequate time to provide their evidence, and as such, council is extending the investigation time frame,” reads the statement, sent by Dereck Seckinger, the general manager of Community Services.

The investigation was initiated by council at the end of May and is to be done using the services of Bloom CME, an Alberta-based company.

It was to have taken several weeks. The town has not revealed what sparked the investigation but several members of the community who have approached council or attended meetings said that tensions at Town Hall have been high for some time.

Many of the problems started with a municipal restructuring process that began several years ago.

Department heads were changed and the community recreation board was eliminated, which sparked some concern.

The Town cited the Code of Ethics Bylaw that all municipalities in Saskatchewan are required to have, which sets out expectations for how councillors should conduct themselves while on the job.

It also established a review and investigation process.

In a subsequent email, the Town confirmed the additional time given was two weeks.
