Hawks soar in win over Ice Wolves

The Nipawin Hawks have won back-to-back games following a 5-2 victory over the La Ronge Ice Wolves Tuesday at the Centennial Arena.

Looking to even the team’s Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season series at a game apiece the Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals from Chase Visser and Evan Forrest.

La Ronge cut the lead in half before the first frame was out, but Nipawin added another in the second courtesy of Captain Maguire Ratzlaff to restore Nipawin’s two-goal lead.

Forrest and Ratzlaff each scored their second goal of the game in the third, Jacob Cossette answered late for the Ice Wolves to cap the scoring. Forrest said the game was another solid team effort.

“Yeah, it was,” he told northeastNOW after the game. “We worked hard out there and got the win.”

The Hawks’ special teams were critical in the victory, Nipawin scored two power-play goals and added their sixth shorthanded goal of the year. La Ronge failed to score on six-man advantage chances including nine straight minutes of power-play time in the second including a major penalty.

Tyson Endall picked up the win for Nipawin, the 18-year-old rookie puck-stopper made 43 saves in the win, his second in as many SJHL starts. Topher Chirico took the loss for the Ice Wolves.

Next up for Nipawin is a southern road trip through Weyburn, Estevan, and Notre Dame on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Forrest, who was acquired from the Bruins ahead of the season said he’s looking forward to the upcoming weekend.

“Three in three, I know I am excited, and the boys are too. Hopefully, we can wrack up a few wins and keep this thing rolling,” he added.

Friday’s game will be broadcasted on 750 Beach Radio beginning at 6:45 p.m., Saturday’s game is on CJVR beginning at the same time. Sunday’s matinee game in Notre Dame will be on Beach Radio starting at 4:15 p.m.
