Two Mustangs returning as Melfort heads to Estevan for weekend trip

Jan 19, 2024 | 3:21 PM

The Melfort Mustangs are heading for an overnight stay in Estevan this weekend as they battle against the Bruins for a pair of games.

The third and fourth matchups between the two clubs will take place on Friday and Saturday at Affinity Place. A Mustang duo will also return to the ice after significant time away.

“We got a couple of boys coming back, Ryan Duguay and (Mathieu) Pigeon are coming back and those are great additions to our team, so it’s gonna be awesome to see them back in the lineup,” said forward Logan Belton.

“I’ll be playing with Ryan Duguay, so that’ll be really good to play with him again and hopefully create some plays.”

The Stangs are going to have to create something, as they’re coming off a 4-0 loss to the Humboldt Broncos, which is the only time the club has been shut out all season.

The defeat also ended the Blue and Green’s streak of 11 straight games of coming away with at least a point.

“This whole week we’ve been working on trying to score goals in different ways and create different plays, so we put a lot of work in this week and I think it’s gonna show up on the scoreboard this weekend,” Belton added.

“We just got to work hard, play our game, get back to it and hopefully, we can get four points out of these guys.”

The contests in Estevan also mark the second and third games of six straight away from home for the Mustangs, the longest road trip of the season.

Despite it being quite late in the season and everyone quite familiar with each other, Belton explained it’s always a good bonding experience to go on long road trips with the boys.

“The bonding is awesome, boys get to sleep in the hotel together and just have fun. Hockey is about having fun, so it’s real nice to go on a trip and it’s great for us to get closer,” he said.

Friday and Saturday night’s contests will commence at 7 p.m. with the Suncrest College pregame shows beginning at 6:45 p.m. on CJVR.
