Winter Festival helping keep Love’s community hall running

The Village of Love saw a smaller turnout than the usual 200 to 250 people for its annual winter festival Saturday, but organizers are happy with the crowd considering the cold weather over the weekend.

About 100 or so spectators made their way through the Love Community Hall during the day to eat a pancake breakfast and participate in events such as nail driving, pillow fighting, and smoosh smoosh races. Another 100 saw Jett Run perform during the evening cabaret.

Shelley Vallier, Mayor of Love and secretary treasurer of the Love and District Board of Trade, which organizes the festival, told northeastNOW the event means a lot to the community in terms of spirit and crucial finances.

“The Love and District Board of Trade maintains this hall because the village can’t afford to,” Vallier said. “Any fundraisers and stuff we have here goes to paying for things that need to be done in the hall, whether it be insurance or when something needs to be repaired. It’s really important to be able to keep this hall going. This hall has been here since 1942.”

“It’s an old building, but she does the job.”

Vallier said Love’s winter festival sees most of their out of town visitors come from Nipawin, White Fox, and Choiceland, and she hopes more will come out during the summer.

Next week, the Love and District Board of Trade will start planning Party in the Park, a day-long music festival at the Love campgrounds, with all proceeds again going toward the Love Community Hall.
