Council to vote in December

City of Melfort proposes 4.86 per cent tax increase for 2027

Nov 6, 2026 | 4:00 PM

We know more about the city of Melfort’s budget numbers for 2027.

The draft operating budget was discussed at this week’s Budget Committee Meeting, and it is proposing a property tax increase of 4.86 per cent.

There will also be a five per cent increase in water and sewer rates.

City Manager Adam Homes told northeastNOW that they are feeling the pinch from higher costs just as citizens are.

“The city of Melfort is dealing with inflation as well,” Homes said. “A lot of our inflationary pressures are coming from our policing costs, our utilities, insurance, fuel, equipment, and construction.”

Homes said most of the proposed tax increases in cities provincewide have been in the four to five percent range.

“It’s all based on the extraordinary inflation numbers that started appearing late in the third, and going into the fourth, quarter.”

The draft operating budget shows revenue of $21.1 million, with expenses of $17 million. The remaining $4.1 million would be transferred to reserves to fund capital projects.

The city’s capital budget will be reviewed at a meeting in a couple of weeks. Homes said following that meeting, the budget will be presented to council in December for further debate and a vote.

While the capital budget has not been presented yet, Homes said much of it has to do with reinvestment into infrastructure.

“Our facilities, our recreation facilities, our roads,” Homes said. “Everyone knows [the roads] are in rough shape and we need to reinvest as much as we can into them.”

Homes said the city will look closely at the recent provincial and federal budgets to see if there are opportunities for grants that would help cut the cost of infrastructure work.
