Trojans to play Mark Cross memorial game in Strasbourg

The Tisdale Trojans are set to play a memorial game next week, as they honour and remember one of their own.

Tisdale will host the Regina Pat Canadians on Friday, Nov. 13; however, the game will be played in Strasbourg, the home of Mark Cross.

“Mark’s always been an upstanding person, a great human being in whatever organization he was involved with, and I think that everybody says the same thing about Mark, which is all what you hear in Tisdale,” explained Trojans head coach Wes Rudy.

“It’s just the right thing to do, to honour Mark, and the time to do it was now. I think it’s fantastic that the Pat C’s were willing to do this and honour Mark with us. It’s obviously nice that it’s quite close to Regina, so it’s not much of a drive for them, and it’s a home game for us, but that’s really a small thing to give up to have a whole game night to honour Mark and the Cross family, and just be able to go there and do this for them.”

Cross, a former Trojans player, back in the 2007/2008 season, later became an assistant coach with the Humboldt Broncos for the 2017/18 campaign. Cross was one of the 16 people who tragically lost their lives in the bus crash near Armley.

There will most certainly be a pregame ceremony, and both teams will likely be sharing a meal together after the game, as Cross is honoured and remembered.

Tisdale is also putting together a fan bus for the game, so community members can go and partake in the Memorial Game.

“You just hope that through tragedy good things happen and people come together. It’s a way for Tisdale to say thanks to Mark for being a Trojan, being a leader, and projecting what being a Trojan is all about. It says a lot about Mark as a person, so it’s a great opportunity for the people of Tisdale to honour Mark,” Rudy added.

“For our players, it’s tough when you’re young to understand how fragile life is, and how much every day is a gift. Age teaches you some lessons in regard to that, and unfortunately, not everybody gets to experience the age aspect of getting older and maturing and going through life. That’s part of the message, but it’s also that Mark played hard, and he did things the right way. Let’s go play Mark’s game and honour him with the hard work ethic and the positivity, and just play the game the right way.”
