Improved tracking infectious diseases in animals
Infectious disease is one of the major risks of swine production.
To strengthen the tools needed to safeguard animal health, the federal government is providing funds to improve the quality of swine health surveillance.
Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Heath MacDonald announced roughly $3.1 million to the Canadian Pork Council to support the development, validation, and upgrading of multiplex technologies, which are comprehensive lab tests that can screen for multiple domestic swine viruses from a single sample.
“Our pork producers care deeply about their animals and work hard to protect them against infectious diseases,” MacDonald said. “By investing in swine health surveillance solutions, we are continuing to equip the industry with the tools it needs to detect and respond quickly.”
