James Smith Cree Nation under State of Emergency

Apr 1, 2020 | 1:00 PM

The James Smith Cree Nation has elected to put the community under a State of Emergency amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

As of Friday, March 27 at 3 p.m., Chiefs signed off on the declaration for a State of Emergency.

A post made by the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) on Facebook showed the full declaration from the James Smith Cree Nation.

It mentions that they are hoping to keep the virus out of the community. It also mentions that as part of Treaty 6, they are guaranteed relief in times like this. All community members are also guaranteed a “medicine chest” to help fight COVID-19 as well according to the declaration.

The State of Emergency will stay in place until another declaration is made to rescind it.
