Play structure goes up at Kin North Playground

A cold, rainy start to Saturday didn’t put a damper on the installation of the play structure at the Kinsmen and Kinette North Playground in Melfort.

Members of the two groups along with 1 Stop Playgrounds worked throughout Saturday and Sunday to install the equipment.

The park is not open to the public yet according to Kinette President and park committee member Anne Marie Waldner.

“We’re still looking at putting walkways in and having cement poured throughout the park as well so it will be a while yet before it’s ready,” Waldner said.

The next phase of the wheelchair accessible, farm-themed park will include a swing set but that will come after another round of fundraising by the two clubs.

“Parks are extremely expensive to put up, without our co-op community spaces grant we wouldn’t even be this far with our park,” Waldner said.

The rubber matting is being done throughout this week followed by a few other details. The hope is that the park will be open to the public by July 1, but Waldner said there is no guarantee on that so they do ask the area is avoided for the time being.

“It’s just exciting to see it all come together because this is something that our clubs have been working towards for three years now or longer,” Waldner said.

The estimated cost of the playground to this point is in the $130,000 range with $100,000 coming from the Co-op community spaces grant.

The park is located on the corner of Alberta Street and Babbington Avenue which is northeast of the Melfort mall.
