Melfort mayor reacts to provincial budget

The City of Melfort didn’t see much for highlights with the provincial budget announcements on Wednesday.

Mayor Rick Lang referred to the 2019-20 budget as ‘unexciting.’

Lang told northeastNOW he was hopeful that the government would come through on a 10-year-old promise on CT Services at the Melfort hospital.

“I’ve heard from local doctors that it’s basic medical equipment and although it would be located in Melfort it would be for use for the entire northeast region,” Lang said. “It certainly would be of benefit to this area.”

The northeast region is fairly large and would amount to about the size of the city of Prince Albert.

“When you look at the entire population, you’re be looking at in the mid 30,000 that could utilize that service,” Lang said.

Lang said back in 2010, the provincial government set aside funding for CT services, but never delivered on it.

Despite that, he welcomes the increase in revenue sharing.

“It’s good to see that the government followed through on that plan,” Lang said who plans to use the funding application for water loss issues in the city.
